Chapter 16

“Good morning!” Linda said cheerily as she entered the office.

“Morning,” Callie echoed, in a much less cheerful voice.

“Get out of bed the wrong side this morning, did we?”

“Yes,” Callie replied and made her way to the small staff kitchen for a much-needed cup of coffee. There was nothing worse than someone who was cheerful in the morning, particularly when you were feeling out of sorts. She had slept fitfully, when she had slept at all. The nagging doubts about what she was thinking of doing had gone around and around in her head all night. She needed to try going to Belfast, for Billy’s sake, but before that, she had to make sure she had a job to go to. She knew, all too well, that she couldn’t ever be the sort of woman who sat at home waiting for her man. She would climb the walls with boredom. She was no housewife and Billy would die of malnutrition if the cooking was up to her. She needed a job if she was going to make a go of moving to be with Billy.

“There’s nothing else for it,” she told the coffee cup as she stirred it vigorously. “I need to go over there and see the situation for myself, maybe set up some interviews.”

She already had Friday afternoon off, as that had been the original date for Dr Brown’s hearing, and after a certain amount of wrangling with Gauri and Linda, she had managed to cancel her Friday morning clinic. As she wasn’t on call over the weekend, she would be able to take a flight to Belfast on Thursday evening and wouldn’t need to leave until late on the Sunday. Billy was working and on-call over the weekend, she knew, but they would be able to spend some time together, and she could busy herself getting to know Belfast better and job hunting. Having time on her own in the city might help her feel less like a tourist, she thought.

“Now all I’ve got to do is be patient,” she told the cupboard, eliciting a strange look from one of the practice nurses who happened to be passing.

“Are you sure?” Kate asked her, when she told her friend her plans for the weekend.

“I have to try and make a go of it. I can’t just let him go without a fight,” Callie replied. “He deserves it, and I do too.”

Kate seemed to realise that she didn’t want to hear any negative views and kept quiet, although, from the look on her face, she had a few comments she wanted to make. Like: is he prepared to fight for it too? And isn’t it too late in the day to save this relationship? Callie had asked herself exactly those questions too, but didn’t have the answers.

“If you are going to rush off and leave me, I shall have to find someone else to share my weekend brunch, then.” There was a ghost of a smile on Kate’s lips.
